Waltham-based CTA Construction has broken ground on an 80,600-square-foot training facility for the U.S.Army at the Natick Soldier Systems Center.

Designed by Cambridge-based architects SMMA, the three-story facility includes a fieldhouse and high-baybiomechanics laboratories and virtual reality systems to support Army research on soldier performance andcombat readiness. The precast concrete facade was designed to integrate the facility into the NSSCcomplex, located in a Natick historic district.

The project is a joint effort between the Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center andthe U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineerscommissioned the project, which is slated for completion in 2023.
